Individuals do not function in a vacuum. They continuously influence one another through
feedback and interaction with one another. Often, behaviors that appear to make little sense
emerge as far more understandable when the surrounding conditions (or context) are better
understood. Individuals, married couples, and family members must grasp and communicate
an understanding of respective viewpoints. These viewpoints may vary considerably.
Individuals need to look for potential circular pathways of causality that may maintain or
perpetuate problems. For example, the thoughts and feelings of one person promote those of
another, which in turn promote the thoughts and feelings of the first person. Suddenly a verbal
exchange can escalate into something that neither party can handle.
“"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything
worthy of praise, think about these things."Philippians 4:8. St. Paul's letter to the Christians at
Philippi was written while he was in prison and in danger of death. Much of this letter is devoted
to instruction about unity and humility and exhortations to growth, joy, and peace in their life
together.
